Description of the heat- and salt-fluxes and sea ice production data set in the Southern Ocean The heat- and salt-fluxes and sea ice production analysis is produced daily on the SSM/I EASE grid and a one-degree lat-lon grid. The analysis uses SSM/I microwave data and ERA-40, ERA-interim, and NCEP2 data. The analysis of heat- and salt-fluxes is described in Tamura, T., K. I. Ohshima, S. Nihashi, and H. Hasumi (2011), Estimation of Surface Heat/Salt Fluxes Associated with Sea Ice Growth/Melt in the Southern Ocean, Scientific Online Letters on the Atmosphere, 7, pp. 17-20, doi:10.2151/sola.2011-005. The analysis of sea ice production is described in Tamura, T., K. I. Ohshima, and S. Nihashi (2008), Mapping of sea ice production for Antarctic coastal polynyas, Geophys. Res. Lett., 35, L07606, doi:10.1029/2007GL032903. The SSM/I thin ice thickness algrithm used for the estimation of sea ice production is described in Tamura, T., K. I. Ohshima, T. Markus, D. J. Cavalieri, S. Nihashi, and N. Hirasawa (2007), Estimation of thin ice thickness and detection of fast ice from SSM/I data in the Antarctic Ocean, J. Atmos. Oceanic Technol., 24, 1757-1772. When you will use these data set in your paper, please be sure to refer Tamura et al. (2011), Tamura et al. (2008), and/or Tamura et al. (2007). Tamura et al. (2011) uses the different value for the latent heat of fusion of sea ice from Tamura et al. (2008). All the heat- and salt- fluxes and sea ice production data set in this web site are derived from the way of Tamura et al. (2011). In this web site, the heat- and salt-fluxes and sea ice production analysis is available in individual yearly files of individual monthly data products.
